Job description

​Our client, an emerging renewable energy firm are looking to appoint their first Legal Counsel.

They specialize in developing, owning and operating utility scale battery storage projects and utilize technology and trading to address power market intermittency, reliability and price volatility.

The business is a few years old and already have an impressive project pipeline and access to capital. This position will report to the CEO and work closely with the Executive team to oversee the legal function of the growing business.

The in-house Senior Counsel who will be responsible for a broad spectrum of legal issues and initiatives. Senior Counsel will lead legal aspects of project development, construction and operations of large renewable energy facilities.

A successful Senior Counsel will guide our client through upcoming debt and equity financings, M&A transactions, joint ventures, and compliance matters. This is a new role added to our team due to ongoing portfolio growth and increased transaction volume.

THE ROLE:

  • Manage multiple relationships with outside legal advisors.

  • Partner closely with our executive team on closing and administering financial transactions at the project and corporate level.

  • Key advisor on project level agreements related to site control, interconnection, procurement, energy offtake, construction, and project operations.

  • Provide legal advice and support that aligns with the firms guiding principles.

  • Identify and analyze legal issues and risks, present clear recommendations, and find practical solutions to complex issues.

  • Ensure compliance and risk mitigation for corporate and project agreements.

  • Establish the company’s legal policies, goals, and objectives.

THE PERSON:

Must-Haves:

  • JD and strong academic record from a leading law school

  • Industry knowledge across the renewable energy space

  • Experience and excellence with project acquisitions and sales, tax equity partnerships, project debt structures, corporate lending facilities, and corporate administration

  • A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience at a law firm or with a relevant in-house legal department

  • Commitment to bringing practical and commercially oriented judgment in solving legal problems.

  • Demonstrated experience establishing credibility and rapport with executive-level management.

  • Strong competency in drafting and negotiating a broad range of contracts.

  • Strong attention to detail, prioritization, multi-tasking, teamwork orientation, and problem-solving skills.
