Job description

​We are seeking a Senior Design Engineer with expertise in electrical design for data center facilities. This role involves overseeing the design of our client's facilities to ensure compliance with our standards, acting as a subject matter expert, and driving the development of design standards and processes. You will also identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to enhance future designs. As a key member of a close-knit team, you will manage tasks independently while supporting team members and collaborating with various stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership:

  • Write and present technical papers to customers, leadership, and peers.

  • Lead problem-solving efforts and remain open to learning from others.

  • Independently research new technologies and develop innovative solutions for data center electrical designs.

  • Manage multiple concurrent projects designed by external consultants.

Design and Standards Development:

  • Lead the Hyperscale Data Center Design Engineering team in designing and developing data center infrastructure.

  • Author, review, and issue Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for external design consultants.

  • Collaborate with vendors and manufacturers to specify appropriate electrical equipment.

  • Ensure designs adhere to relevant codes and standards across various jurisdictions.

  • Develop and maintain the Hyperscale Basis of Design, design standards, and specification templates.

Project and Consultant Management:

  • Assess engineering calculations and evaluate design options.

  • Review campus utility and site layouts during master planning.

  • Manage external design consultants through all project phases.

  • Coordinate with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) and Utilities.

Collaboration and Improvement:

  • Work with internal and external MEP Engineers, Construction Managers, and other related disciplines.

  • Identify and lead initiatives to improve cost, quality, schedule, and consistency across sites.

  • Travel for site assessments, consultant selection, internal design meetings, construction reviews, and interactions with AHJs, design consultants, quantity surveyors, and building owners.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This role does not include supervisory duties.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of building and site construction related to electrical generation and distribution.

  • Expertise in electrical protection and control systems, grounding, diesel generators, uninterruptible power systems, and current battery technologies for hyperscale data centers.

  • Experience in designing large-scale greenfield and brownfield data center facilities from inception through handoff.

  • Awareness of industry design trends and standards.

  • Proficiency in interpreting electrical codes and standards, including NEC, NFPA, UL, ANSI, BICSI, and utility requirements.

Software and Tools:

  • Proficient in Bluebeam, SKM, ETap, Excel, SmartSheet, and MS Office.

Education and Experience:

  • Certification:

    Registered Professional Engineer (PE).

  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • Experience:

    Minimum of 8 years of experience in designing data center facilities.
