Job description
Our client is a leading independent power producer (IPP) specializing in developing, owning and operating utility scale energy storage projects. Their development pipeline is approximately 10GW with around 2GW in operation/late storage development. As a result of this growth, they need a dynamic Vice President of Power Origination to lead efforts in identifying and securing new opportunities for growth.
Position Overview:
As the Vice President of Power Origination, you will be responsible for spearheading the development and execution of our power origination strategy. This role requires a strategic leader with a deep understanding of the energy storage market, strong industry relationships, and a proven track record in structuring and negotiating power purchase agreements (PPAs) and other key contracts. You will play a crucial role in driving the growth of our energy storage portfolio and establishing [Company Name] as a leader in the sector.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
Develop and implement the company’s power origination strategy to achieve growth targets and expand our energy storage portfolio.
Identify and evaluate new business opportunities, market trends, and emerging technologies to inform strategic decision-making.
Market Development and Relationship Management:
Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including utilities, Independent System Operators (ISOs), government agencies, and industry partners.
Represent [Company Name] at industry conferences, trade shows, and other events to enhance our market presence and establish strategic partnerships.
Deal Structuring and Negotiation:
Lead the negotiation and structuring of power purchase agreements (PPAs), capacity contracts, and other commercial agreements.
Collaborate with legal, finance, and technical teams to ensure favorable terms and successful deal execution.
Project Pipeline Development:
Oversee the identification and evaluation of potential project sites and opportunities for energy storage projects.
Drive the development of a robust project pipeline by coordinating with internal teams and external partners.
Financial and Risk Management:
Assess the financial viability and risk profile of potential projects, including conducting financial modeling and analysis.
Develop and manage budgets for origination activities, ensuring alignment with overall company objectives.
Team Leadership and Development:
Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing team of power origination professionals.
Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment that drives performance and professional growth.
Regulatory and Policy Advocacy:
Stay informed about regulatory changes and policy developments affecting the energy storage sector.
Advocate for favorable policies and regulations that support the growth of the energy storage industry and [Company Name]’s business objectives.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Energy Management, or a related field; advanced degree or MBA preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in the energy sector, with a focus on power origination, energy storage, or related areas.
Proven track record of successfully negotiating and closing complex power purchase agreements (PPAs) and other commercial contracts.
Strong network and relationships within the energy storage industry, utilities, and regulatory agencies.
Excellent strategic thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and build relationships at all organizational levels.
Experience in managing and leading teams effectively.
